Using GDM instead of xlogin in Solaris

1. Run the following command to get the name of the service for gdm. # svcs -a | grep gdm 2. Enable gdm -login by running something like this, # svcadm enable gdm2-login 3. Disable dtlogin by killing the process via the following: # /usr/dt/bin/dtconfig -d # /etc/init.d/dtlogin stop 4. Reboot. # init 6 Note: If your login resolution goes to 8 bit mode (you'll know it when you see it) then you need to add "-defdepth 24" to the end of all the command lines containing "Xsun" in /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf

ASCII Art for banners or MOTD files

Sometimes it's nice to include the server name as a banner in the message of the day or MOTD file. A good place to get this created is at http://software.hixie.ch/utilities/cgi/figlet/figlet Here's and example. ___ _ _ _ ___ | __(_)__ _| |___| |_ / __| ___ _ ___ _____ _ _ | _|| / _` | / -_) _| \__ \/ -_) '_\ V / -_) '_| |_| |_\__, |_\___|\__| |___/\___|_| \_/\___|_| |___/

Using Debian AutoInstall

Debian has a neat auto install function that allows you to automate the installation of a debian box. First you need to boot from the normal installation CD then, when it stops a the prompt enter something like: auto url=http://web.site.com/preseed.cfg You will need to look on the Debian web site for information on how to configure the preseed.cfg file and you must have some sort of web server available to put the config file on. You don't have to put the Debian installation files there, only the config file.

Killing a hung instance

Although you should never kill an Oracle instance from the OS but instead cleanly shut it down, sometimes that is just not possible. Sometimes there is just no option but to kill all the running processes. This might sound like a daunting task, one instance can have hundreds of processes running against it.
